Revolution in reading: Chemnitz university invents digital reading tool Leon!

A groundbreaking online reading tool called Leon has come into focus, now even nominated for the German Reading Prize 2025! Developed by the innovative team at the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research at the Technical University of Chemnitz led by Professor Michael Krelle, this tool has the potential to sustainably improve the reading skills of students.

innovative project in NRW

Leon, which means "reader online", has been available in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2023 and is already very popular. It runs easily on every computer, laptop or tablet. Professor Krelle emphasizes that the entire material is accessible to schools nationwide, provided that the federal states provide the necessary technical infrastructure. NRW dared to take this step and not only supports the project financially, but also scientifically. Leon is successfully used at around 5,000 schools! The browser -based tool is perfect for second to sixth class students and offers a huge reading library with around 400 texts as well as videos and teaching examples.

Interactive reading promotion with KI

With Leon, students can train their reading skills in a targeted manner, whether loud or quiet, in a team or even in karaoke mode! The possibility to record your own texts enables the students to document their progress and actively work on it. And that's not all: the Chemnitz team is already working on a AI support, which will give the students even more detailed feedback in the future. "We are looking forward to the nomination and are proud of how Leon can also bring reading less and socio -economically disadvantaged students closer to reading. Over 150,000 users already benefit from our digital application, and we have great plans to further expand Leon and also bring them to other federal states," adds Krelle.
