Görlitz: Tourism could boost!

Görlitz. A radiant Monday morning, and everything was ready to hand over an open letter to Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer on the Görlitzer Altstadtbrücke. But the main player had those present waiting - important discussions about the future of the state government were due for him. The letter, filled with wishes and hopes, is now on the way to Dresden. Explanations of representatives from Görlitz, Bautzen and Dresden require a continuous remote connection: Dresden-Wroclaw should lead via Görlitz and thus make this city a junction for cyclists!

The aim of this Initiative is a feasibility study that represents the first step to achieve this connection. "Now is the perfect time to present the topic of the Free State," said Görlitz district administrator Stephan Meyer. An attractive cycle path network that is financed by the Free State could give the region new shine. The idea is not new - there were already plans in 2019, but the pandemic let everything stall. Now there is a broad interest in implementation, according to Wegenbund managing director Frank Kutzner.

Connection between Germany and Poland

One of the main difficulties remains the Polish section of the bike path. While there are already many cycling routes in Germany, it still looks mau on the other side of the border. "If the financing takes place in good time, the feasibility study 2026 could be completed," says Kutzner. The bike path could be completed on the German side by 2030 - including careful planning and marketing, which makes shopping and overnight stays along the route.

But the question remains: How quickly will work on the Polish side? In the meantime, District Administrator Meyer emphasizes the urgency of maintaining existing infrastructure in Dresden. "Long -term goals are important, but the short -term challenges have to be mastered first." A clear connection on existing bike paths could increase the attractiveness of the region, which could rely on a similar success concept as the Berlin-Kopenhagen cycle path. Oliver Herberg from the Marketing Society sees this bike connection a great opportunity to revitalize the Saxon city route and link many cultural highlights.
