Safe crossing required: Magdeburg's parents fight for zebra crossings!
In Magdeburg, the safety of pedestrians and cyclists is in acute danger! On Hegelstrasse, parents and children have to undertake a risky maneuver to get from the daycare center to the playground. A zebra crossing is urgently needed here! Pedestrians and cyclists are also at great risk at Hasselbachplatz, which should soon be accessible again. The reform of the road traffic law could help municipalities to introduce 30 km/h zones and zebra crossings more quickly, but Magdeburg is falling far short of expectations here.
Alarming danger spots in the city
Applications are repeatedly submitted to the city council to defuse dangerous areas, but these often fail due to the city's lack of ability to act. At an event on the mobility transition organized by the Greens, concerned citizens had the opportunity to mark danger points on a large map of Magdeburg. The response was overwhelming: representatives from districts, school parent councils and daycare centers came together to draw attention to the pressing problems.
Christina Hayn, whose child attends the Mandala daycare center on Hegelstrasse, has already started a petition for more zebra crossings in the old town. But citizens' concerns go beyond the city center. In total, calls for 30 km/h zones, 21 suggestions for new zebra crossings and 14 ideas for improving cycling traffic were submitted in twelve places. Jürgen Canehl from the AG Mobility emphasizes: “The most beautiful 30 km/h zone or central island is of no use if the flow of vehicles does not stop and does not give priority to pedestrian traffic.” The Magdeburgers' proposals should now reach the city council as an application. Time is running out!
