Energy future in view: incentive regulation for the energy transition discussed

On October 15, 2024, the first dena Dialog Netze 2024 took place, a significant event aimed at discussing important energy infrastructure issues in Germany. The dialogue involves the transfer of regulatory powers from the legislature to the Federal Network Agency, a step that could potentially entail profound changes in the incentive regulation of electricity networks.

The focus of the event was on the question of how incentive regulation can be adapted to make the power grids meet the requirements of an energy transition. The Federal Network Agency published a key points paper in February 2024 that initiated the discussion about the future design of the regulatory framework. The aim of the regulatory authority is to develop concrete proposals based on exchanges with various players from the industry and experts.

Program highlights

The agenda of the dena dialogue was comprehensive and significant contributions came from different perspectives. Philipp Heilmaier, Head of Future Energy Supply at dena, opened the event with a welcome address. This was followed by a keynote speech by Gregor Glasmacher, who presented the Federal Network Agency's views on regulatory developments.

Another important speaker was Markus Hümmer, a member of the Bundestag from the SPD, who gave political insights into the topic. The afternoon included a number of industry impulses, with experts such as David Bendorf from E.ON and Dr. Wolfgang Fritz from Consentec GmbH presented their views on the energy transition and regulation.

There was also a panel discussion where the speakers could interact with the audience. Katharina Umpfenbach, head of infrastructure and overall systems at dena, moderated the discussion and led this critical exchange.

The event ended with a relaxed networking opportunity over pretzels and drinks, which allowed participants to delve deeper into the topics discussed and make new contacts.

The increasing interest in the political and economic design of electricity networks highlights the urgency of creating a robust network that meets the requirements of future energy supply. The ongoing discussions and exchange of ideas, such as at the dena dialogue, are essential for the development of practical and effective regulation.

The dena Networks 2024 Dialogue is financed by various partners, including prominent companies such as 50Hertz, badenovaNETZE and Siemens, who also have an interest in a successful and sustainable energy transition.
