Trump rails against Germany: You think we're stupid!

Donald Trump, the former President of the USA, delivered a sharp attack on Germany and the press at one of his last campaign events in Lititz, Pennsylvania. With his usual provocative statements, Trump not only placed his Democratic rival Kamala Harris at the center of his attacks, but also turned against his supposed roots in Germany. “They didn’t love me, and I have roots there,” explained the Republican, who referred to his ancestors from Kallstadt in Rhineland-Palatinate.

“The Germans loved my predecessor, Barack Obama, because they ate our lunch,” Trump mocked, criticizing Germany’s economic prosperity, which he said came at the expense of the United States. He also took aim at former Chancellor Angela Merkel by claiming she had promised him that Germany would meet its commitments by 2035. “They think we’re stupid people,” Trump added in a mock German accent.

Trump attacks journalists

However, the attacks on Germany were only part of his speech. Trump also turned against the journalists in attendance, calling them “fake news.” To cheers from his supporters, he declared: “What we have over there is the fake news.” He stressed that he doesn't care about the press and that someone would have to "shoot through the fake news" to hit him. These comments followed an incident in July in which Trump wanted to appear more protected after an assassination attempt.

The mood in the US election campaign is becoming increasingly heated and concerns about possible violent attacks are growing. The presidential election is just around the corner, and current polls show a neck-and-neck race between Trump and Harris. Trump warned of a “bunch of fraudsters” who wanted to deny him the election victory. Tuesday's election could be crucial for the political future of the United States.
