Carmelite monastery in Boppard: Refurbishment shows new colors!

The renovation of the former Carmelite monastery in Boppard continues to take shape. This measure affects a listed building and is one of the most important construction projects in the city. A significant part of the scaffolding was recently removed, which means that the new color and facade design has now become visible. The city administration reports that the construction work in close cooperation with the monument preservation of the General Directorate Cultural Heritage (GDKE) is carried out.

In the course of the renovation, an commissioned restorer has discovered important historical details that decrease to the baroque construction phase around 1730. These finds have an immediate effect on the design execution of the project. The windows received a baroque structure, which gives the overall picture of the monastery an authentic character.

construction progress and color design

The responsible architects have designed a detailed color concept that was set in coordination with the GDKE. Architectural elements such as walls, cornices and dormer fronts were painted in a uniform red tone. The walls, on the other hand, shine in a broken, cool white, which is reminiscent of light gray. Different shades of gray were chosen for the window frames, with the outer ones received a lighter nuance.

Currently final carpentry work in the transition areas to the adjacent church, as well as roofing work in the courtyard. Drywall work and carpentry work also take place. The renewal of the power of the power and other building services trades is also promoted. The south side of the monastery has already been completed, while the work on the east and west facade is on the brink.

This is not only to restore the historical substance, but also to give the monastery a new usage function, which meets both the requirements of monument conservation and contemporary standards. The renovation work is therefore not only an upgrading of the building, but also contribute to the preservation of the cultural identity of the city of Boppard. As the city administration reports , the project also has a high symbolism for the local community, since it puts the value of historical architecture in the foreground and at the same time exploits the possibilities of modern use.
