Furies on stage: unleashing female rage with wit and depth!
In the Hoppstädter Sommersaal, viewers can expect an exciting play that deals with the topic of anger. Under the title “Furies”, the complexity and facets of emotion are presented in a humorous and serious way in two performances by the actresses Claudia Stump and Anja Balzer. The two of them have dealt intensively with the question: What is anger and how does it arise?
The piece combines theatrical improvisation with women's everyday lives and thus offers a look back at the root of emotion - from ancient Greece to the modern world, where bullying plays a major role in everyday office life. “We try to convey the seriousness and lightness with cheeky irony,” explains Stump. The viewer can expect to be informed about the different ways of expressing anger, and this makes the play both captivating and educational.
Special stage elements
The special thing about “Furien” is the inclusion of a speaking choir made up of seven amateur players from the region. This extra support on stage allows the actresses to convey a sense of community and collective anger. Stump explains that this idea was inspired by this year's Cultural Summer theme, which focuses on Southern Europe. The Greek chorus is not only a stylistic element, but also a bridge to the affect of the piece in terms of anger.
Director Rama Nicholas, an Australian, also contributed to the creation of the piece. She accompanied the rehearsals at the beginning and ensured that lightness and irony flowed into the story. Her approach gives the work a deeper perspective, illuminating the different facets of anger in an authentic and exciting way.
The plot focuses on two friends whose different ways of dealing with their anger are shown. This constellation offers a lot of space for comical and thoughtful moments and thus appeals to the audience on several levels. The piece, whose scenes were created from improvisations, is intended to reflect the experiences of many women and is therefore a conscious step towards a more honest representation of female emotions on stage.
The performance will take place on Saturday October 5th and Sunday October 6th, with the first performance already sold out. Remaining tickets are still available for the second performance. However, those interested should register quickly, as the piece will certainly attract many viewers due to its relevant topic and appealing style.
