Nuclear waste search: Where will the highly radioactive garbage be stored in the future?

Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Deutschland - The search for the perfect place for storing high -radioactive nuclear waste is becoming increasingly complicated! Where should the dangerous garbage that has been accumulated in Germany over 60 years of nuclear power in the future?

in Rhineland-Palatinate are only a few areas left in the race! The Federal Society for Final storage (BGE) has drastically reduced the potential areas. Only regions around Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Bad Dürkheim, Grünstadt and Guntersblum are on the list. These zones belong to the so-called Central German crystal zone, which extends over several federal states, including Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse. But time is forced!

The BGE further narrowed down the potential areas in its current report - only 44 percent of the 54 percent of the German national area are left! This means that 18 percent of the areas examined are considered unsuitable or only slightly suitable. The interactive card with the results is already available online, but a final decision on the appropriate locations is not expected until the end of 2027!

The urgency is alarming: it is about the safe storage of 27,000 cubic meters of high -radioactive nuclear waste, which has to be kept safely for a million years! This dangerous waste is currently kept in 16 above -ground intermediate camps in various federal states. The Federal Ministry of the Environment has great hopes for a solution by 2050 - but that would be 20 years later than originally planned!
