Rescue heroes wanted! Resuscitation training on Schlossplatz Erlangen

On October 16, 2024, World Anesthesia Day, the Erlangen University Hospital will hold resuscitation training on Schlossplatz. This event aims to raise awareness among the population and impart practical skills that can be life-saving in an emergency. Every year around 200 people in Germany have to be resuscitated, and many of these emergencies occur in private environments. It is crucial to be able to react quickly at such critical moments in order to improve the chances of survival for those affected.

The Erlangen University Hospital organizes this educational day together with various Erlangen aid organizations, including the Bavarian Red Cross and the Erlangen Fire Department. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., anyone interested can learn how to resuscitate using manikins for adults, children and babies under the guidance of trained staff. At 10 a.m. the action will be led by Prof. Dr. Roland C. E. Francis, the director of the anesthesiological clinic, and mayor Jörg Volleth opened.

Competitive pressure to improve resuscitation skills

The event is not only an opportunity to learn new skills, but also a platform for questions and exchange. "For many, it has been a long time since their last first aid course, others may have never trained in resuscitation measures. We are ready to show anyone interested how they can become life savers," explains Martin Brüggemann, head of the Bavarian Red Cross Training Center - Erlangen-Höchstadt district association.

The focus is on the practical implementation of resuscitation techniques. "Frequent questions are: When do I call the emergency number? How long and how hard do I have to press? Is mouth-to-mouth resuscitation necessary?" Brüggemann continued. The event aims to let participants practice in a safe environment so they know what to do in an emergency.

Visitors can not only refresh their existing knowledge, but also learn completely new skills. "Every level of knowledge is welcome. It is important that as many people as possible become familiar with the resuscitation measures. This way they can act as part of the rescue chain in an emergency," emphasizes Prof. Francis.

World Anesthesia Day has a special historical significance because ether anesthesia was publicly demonstrated for the first time on October 16, 1846. This event in Erlangen is one of many worldwide that draw attention to the importance of anesthesiology and emergency medicine.

Numerous vehicles, tents and training dummies are provided for the training. The collaboration between various rescue organizations and the Erlangen City Police Department is intended to ensure a varied and informative day. In addition to the Erlangen University Hospital and the BRK, the ASB regional association as well as the DLRG and the Technical Relief Organization are also active on this day.

The resuscitation training on Schlossplatz represents an important opportunity to familiarize yourself with life-saving measures and thus make a valuable contribution to public health. The event is open to all age groups - children, young people and adults can actively participate and try their hand at practical exercises.
