Smoking ban in Great Britain: Towards a smoke-free generation!
London is on the verge of a revolutionary change in the fight against smoking! The British government has now introduced its groundbreaking bill into parliament that would drastically restrict smoking in Great Britain. The reforms, described as "world-leading", aim to phase out smoking, protect public health and strengthen the economy, according to the health ministry.
A particularly courageous step: Anyone who turns 15 this year or is younger should never be able to legally buy cigarettes! This goal of raising a smoke-free generation was already sought by the previous Conservative government, but was put on hold due to early elections. Now the new social democratic government is picking up the thread again and is even planning to extend the ban on smoking outdoors! Playgrounds and areas around schools and clinics could soon be smoke-free, while the exact locations have yet to be determined.
Drastic measures against e-cigarettes
The government is going even further: from June 1, 2025, the use of disposable e-cigarettes, which are particularly popular among young people, will be banned! In addition, advertising for conventional e-cigarettes will be removed from circulation. The flavors and design of vapes are also being severely restricted. Health Minister Wes Streeting stresses that these bold measures will save thousands of lives by protecting children from nicotine addiction and protecting vulnerable people from the dangers of second-hand smoke.
In the UK, 80,000 people die every year from smoking, and the economic damage is estimated at £18 billion (€21.4 billion). The bill now needs to be approved by the lower house before being voted on in the upper house. If the Tobacco and Vapes Bill passes, Britain will usher in a new era of non-smoking!
