Potsdam honors: Klingnersches Haus is the second best building in 2023!

A bright day for the Potsdam housing cooperative in 1956! The impressive Klingnersche Haus at Alter Markt 1-3 was named the second most beautiful building of 2023. This prestigious honor was presented by Stadtbild Deutschland e.V., an association that promotes building culture. The ceremonial handover took place directly in front of the magnificent building, and the cooperative was represented by its board members Matthias Pludra, Klaus-Dieter Boshold and Roman Poosch.

Tilo Bergmann, the association's federal chairman, praised the reconstruction of the Klingner House as “one of the most beautiful aspects of the city's repairs”. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of everyone involved - from the builder to the architects to the executing trades. “Something outstanding has been created here,” says Bergmann enthusiastically. Matthias Pludra thanked everyone warmly for the recognition and emphasized the cooperative's mission to create attractive living space for its members.

Architectural masterpiece

Eric van Geisten, architect of the project, recalled the planning challenges. “We had to design a modern building that closely resembles the historical model,” he explained. The new Klingner house impresses with five full floors and a roof terrace, while the facade follows the representative features of the previous building. Diese gelungene Verbindung von Tradition und Moderne macht das Gebäude zu einem wahren Schmuckstück in Potsdam.

The Klingner House, which was built in 1750, has an eventful history. Originally designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, it was badly damaged during World War II. The Potsdam Housing Association 1956 took on the reconstruction of the historical statues on the gable triangle, which were restored based on old photographs. These statues, which now bear the names “The Hopeful,” “The Knowing,” and “The Loving,” give the building a special touch and are a reminder of the rich history of the place.
