Lack of space in Bremen schools: urgent need for action!

In Bremen-Nord, the continued increase in the number of students has become a serious problem for educational institutions. According to a report by the Weser courier The increasing demand for school places is leading to an acute shortage of space at schools in this region. This situation requires urgent action as the existing facilities are not sufficient to meet the needs of the growing number of students.

To counteract this problem, several construction projects and renovations are planned. However, Bremen's budget situation has an influence on the realization of these projects. An overview of the most important construction projects shows that the Burgdamm elementary school has, among other things, set up a temporary cafeteria in two classrooms. Classes will continue to take place temporarily in a mobile building, while the construction of a new modular cafeteria is planned for the future. The corresponding decision documents are to be created in the first quarter of 2023.

Planned projects at a glance

  • Neue Grundschule Lesum: Gründung in Mobilbauten; Schulcontainer sollen zum Schulstart im Sommer bereitstehen.
  • Oberschule Lesum: Zusammenführung an einem Standort, Umzug der Berufsschule zum Berufsschulcampus West zurückgestellt.
  • Schule Borchshöhe: Neubau einer vierzügigen Schule mit Mensa und Sporthalle in Planung.

In parallel to the challenges on site, a study by the... Conference of Ministers of Education that the total number of students in Germany will increase by around 1 million (9.2%) from almost 11 million in 2022 by 2035. The western German states and city states are particularly affected, while the number of students in the eastern German states remains almost constant.

These developments not only highlight the challenge in Bremen, but also the long-term changes in Germany's education system, which will be accompanied by increased demand for school places. In addition, the expected development in student numbers will be used for planning the teacher recruitment requirement calculation in the federal states, which is scheduled for December 2023.
