Parking lot becomes a green paradise: The Naschpark is taking shape!

On July 10, 2025, the starting signal was given for the redesign of a parking lot between the Wienzeilen in Vienna. The newly planned “Naschpark” will cover an area of 6,820 m² and be equipped with almost 70 trees and plenty of greenery. The initiative to create the park shows the city's commitment to more green spaces, which is particularly important for urbanization and the city climate. According to presse.wien.gv.at, the flea market will remain on site and will be integrated into the new concept.

The first trees have already been delivered and will be planted gradually over the coming months. During the announcement, Planning Councilor Ulli Sima highlighted the essential role of greening and cooling in the city. The park is also being built on a 100-year-old arch of the Vienna River and a subway line, which entails special static requirements. To protect the roots of the new plants, a special reinforced concrete slab is used.

Design and offerings of the Naschpark

The Naschpark will offer a wide range of leisure options. Shady pergolas, seating, picnic tables, hammocks and lawns are planned. There will also be a balancing device for children, making the park a family-friendly place. Citizen participation was a central part of the planning from the beginning, which began in 2021. An EU-wide ideas competition led to the selection of nine winners who developed a master plan for the park. The Mostlikely architectural firm and DnD Landschaftsplanung were able to win the implementation competition for the implementation in autumn 2023. Completion of the Naschpark is planned for autumn 2025.

In the context of designing urban green spaces, numbers play an important role. In the current legislative period from 2020 to 2025, a total of 344 greening projects were implemented in Vienna, including more than 3,316 trees planted and 2,745 new seating options on urban terrain. This shows the growing importance of green spaces for the cityscape and the quality of life of citizens.

Civic engagement in Erkrath

Similar trends in the design of green spaces can also be observed in other cities, such as Erkrath. On May 15th, around 20 citizens came together to discuss the design of public green spaces. Among the participants were local politicians who praised citizen participation. The development plan for the “Green Center” on Wimmersberg includes fruit trees and a barrier-free children’s playground. However, critics expressed concerns about the felling of trees, which planners presented as a measure that had already been decided. Here too, citizens' ideas flow into the planning processes in order to meet the individual needs of the community, as reported on erkrath.jetzt.

A crucial point in these plans is the consideration of climate change and flood protection. Practical solutions such as underground rain retention basins are planned for future infrastructure. In the on-site discussions, the participants were also able to make suggestions for the design of play equipment and sports opportunities, thereby providing a platform for actively shaping the living environment.

The commitment to urban greenery is reflected not only in the implementation of local projects, but also in nationwide initiatives. One of these is the “Urban green – species-rich and diverse” project, which is intended to motivate cities in Germany to design and maintain green spaces in a natural way. These efforts contribute to a higher quality of life, health and biodiversity in urban areas, as noted on bfn.de.
