Winter flood of breakdown: ÖAMTC and ADAC in continuous use
In January 2025, the breakdown helpers of the Vorarlberg ÖAMTC experienced a real commodity marathon: with a total of 23,550 missions, especially because of weak or empty car batteries, the helpers were tireless. The onset of winter with freezing temperatures kept many drivers in breath in Vorarlberg and forced them to call them. "Especially in extreme cold and in hot summer months, the breakdowns are piling up," said Jürgen Wagner from the ÖAMTC. The start -up aid has become particularly challenging in recent months, since modern car batteries have been equipped with complex control systems that make it difficult to bridge. So the helpers not only had to intervene with trivial problems, but also had tricky cases, such as that of a small Yorkshire Terrier who was locked up in a car.
Breakdown help in record format
As in neighboring Germany, the breakdown helpers were more in demand than ever in 2023. The ADAC road watch moved 3,531,058 times, which is an average of 9,674 missions per day, which corresponds to an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the previous year. The most common cause of the breakdown remains the car battery, which was responsible for the calls for help in 44.1 percent of all cases. The significant increase in electric cars is particularly remarkable, where the starter battery was the main cause of breakdowns in 2023. With 30,009 missions for pure electric vehicles, there was an increase of around 50 percent compared to the previous year. According to ADAC, the rising figures are a result of the increasing traffic volume after corona pandemic.
