Winter breakdowns: ÖAMTC and ADAC in constant use
In January 2025, the breakdown helpers at the ÖAMTC in Vorarlberg experienced a veritable marathon of operations: with a total of 23,550 calls, mainly due to weak or empty car batteries, the helpers worked tirelessly. The onset of winter with freezing temperatures kept many drivers in Vorarlberg on tenterhooks and forced them to call for help. “Breakdowns increase, especially in extreme cold and in the hot summer months,” said Jürgen Wagner from the ÖAMTC. Jump-starting has become particularly challenging in recent months, as modern car batteries are equipped with complex control systems that make overriding difficult. The helpers not only had to intervene with trivial problems, but also had to deal with tricky cases, such as that of a small Yorkshire terrier who was locked in a car.
Breakdown assistance in record format
As in neighboring Germany, roadside assistance was more in demand than ever in 2023. The ADAC road rescue service was deployed 3,531,058 times, an average of 9,674 missions per day, which corresponds to an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the previous year. The most common cause of breakdowns remains the car battery, which was responsible for calls for help in 44.1 percent of all cases. The significant increase in electric cars is particularly notable, where the starter battery was the main cause of breakdowns in 2023. With 30,009 deployments of purely electric vehicles, there was an increase of around 50 percent compared to the previous year. According to ADAC, the increasing numbers are a result of the increasing traffic volume after the corona pandemic.
In Vorarlberg and Germany it is clear: the winter months represent major challenges for drivers and make breakdown assistance more necessary than ever. Whether it's an oil change, tire problems or the wrong gas station - the helpers are there when you're in the greatest hurry.
