An exciting city walk is coming! The AWO Herne invites all history buffs to an informative tour of Herne-Mitte. Under the motto “Stories about the history of Herne-Mitte” the event will take place on ThursdayNovember 7, 2024, to3 p.ma one-off excursion will take place. The meeting point is the well-known Robert-Brauner-Platz.
Can our city guide Udo Jakat take the participants on a journey through time with captivating stories? In any case! On this special day, participants experience how history comes to life not only in time, but also directly in place. It starts with an interesting anecdote about Elvis and his connection to Herne.
The turbulent past: Holocaust and architecture
During the walk, the influential work of Emil Fahrenkamp, the architect of the famous Karstadt building, will also be highlighted. Participants also have the opportunity to jointly remember the victims of the Holocaust and the brave resistance fighters against National Socialism. A highlight is the exciting history of Bahnhofstrasse, which connected Herne with Bochum and has experienced a lot through its various renovations.
Another exciting point is exploring the turn-of-the-century architecture via Neustrasse and Bebelstrasse as well as an impressive view from Rathausplatz. At the end you have the opportunity to relax with a warm drink and reflect on the day's experiences.
