New housing project in Hamm: Families with disabilities find a home!
In Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, a groundbreaking housing project is being built that will enable parents with disabilities to lead a self-determined life! In two years, the first of a total of 12 families will move into a property that is currently overgrown. The plans for the modern, low-rise buildings are already in full swing and promise an innovative form of living that has never existed in North Rhine-Westphalia!
Unique concept for affected families
Mayor Marc Herter is enthusiastic about this project, which not only focuses on children with disabilities, but also focuses on the needs of parents with disabilities. “We think about families who are facing different challenges,” he explains. Jennifer Buhla from the association “Volle Kraft Menschlichkeit” (vkm) emphasizes that the parents live in their own apartments while at the same time receiving the necessary support. The concept of outpatient intensive care ensures that professional care is available around the clock, be it from pediatric nurses or social workers.
The city of Hamm consciously decided on this project in order to create more than just living space on the brownfield site. City planning officer Andreas Mentz emphasizes that the location is ideal: “There is everything you need here – shops, schools, a park, everything within walking distance!” This shows the clear need, which has already been proven by numerous inquiries from those affected and institutions such as the youth welfare office and the LWL.
Construction plans and time frames
The building permit is expected in November and the first excavators are expected to arrive next summer. Those involved are hopeful that the first families will be able to move in by the end of 2027. With 15 new jobs being created, this project will not only benefit the affected families, but also the entire community in Hamm!
