Storm warning for Dortmund: Christmas market in danger?

Dortmund.Dortmund is facing a stormy weekend that threatens the festive mood at the Christmas market! With wind gusts that can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, the question arises: Does the Christmas market have to close?

On Friday the sky over Dortmund will be gloomy and rainy, dampening the anticipation of mulled wine and festive treats. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of falling branches and flying objects. Outdoor Christmas decorations should be secured urgently, otherwise the Christmas characters will fly through the air like Rudolf!

Christmas market in danger? The organizer remains calm

But the organizer Patrick Arens is optimistic. "We're in the middle of the city center here, so there's no event in an open area. As long as the city center stops, we'll stop," he explains. The security concept of Dortmund's Christmas Town ensures that the stands remain stable, even in stormy weather. “We calculated everything so that it couldn’t fall over,” emphasizes Arens. The showmen are on site and ready to intervene immediately should anything happen.

The city could close facilities such as zoos, playgrounds and schools during extreme weather conditions, but Arens believes the current situation is not exceptional. “We have had other storms that were worse than what is coming now,” he says. While snow may fall at higher altitudes, the weather in Dortmund will remain cloudy and rainy, with temperatures between three and nine degrees. The anticipation for the Christmas market remains despite the storm warning!
