Fire protection for children: This is how daycare centers in Lemwerder and Berne learn safety!

In an exciting and educational scenario, daycare centers in Lemwerder and Berne have started their fire drills! Despite the cool weather and light drizzle, the little ones were impressively taught how important it is to act quickly in an emergency. Antje Stanke, deputy head of the Berne daycare center, emphasizes: “When the loud house siren goes off, the children have to go outside without explanation!” These exercises are not only educational, but can be vital to survival in the event of a fire.

The exercises are designed to be surprising and realistic – only the facility manager and the caretaker know! Through this method, children learn how to behave in an emergency. In the Lemwerder daycare center, the topic of fire protection is prepared in a playful way. Songs, books and craft activities are on the program while the children playfully learn what burns and what doesn't. “We show the children which emergency numbers they have to call,” explains Inga Bremermann, the head of the kindergarten.

Cooperation with the fire department

The collaboration with the local fire departments is a highlight of the fire protection projects. The preschool children have the opportunity to visit the Lemwerder Volunteer Fire Department and explore the large fire engine. “If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to experience the fire engine up close!” says Bremermann happily. The children not only learn playfully but also practically how they should behave in an emergency.

The exercises uncover vulnerabilities and help staff improve security. Katharina Heiber from the CVJM daycare center “The Colorful Wave” recently completed fire protection training and is planning an exercise with the children. “We teach children that it is OK to go outside barefoot or in slippers,” she explains. Such measures are crucial in order to be able to react quickly and safely in an emergency. The Berne daycare center also pays attention to safety by avoiding open fires. “We haven’t lit candles for years,” says Stanke.
