Lifeguards shine at the German Championships in Hanover!

A true spectacle in the water! On November 1st and 2nd, around 1,200 lifeguards from all over Germany gathered in the stadium pool in Hanover for the 51st German All-Around Championships. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) organized this exciting competition for the third time in a row in the capital of Lower Saxony. DLRG sports director Kai Schirmer emphasized that the exciting competitions provide promising insights into the future of rescue sports. The performances in the younger age groups are a reason for hope!

The athletes competed against each other in five age groups, with the focus being on speed and the skillful use of rescue sports equipment. On Saturday evening, not only the fastest individual and team competitors were honored, but also the best national associations. Brandenburg defended its title, while Westphalia and Bavaria completed the podium. Lower Saxony showed an upward trend and ended up in fifth place after performing worse in previous years. But next year the stadium swimming pool will not be available as a competition venue due to renovation work.

Record-breaking performances

The individual competitions on Friday produced exceptional performances! Leo Ilias Baumann from the DLRG Völklingen caused a storm of cheers when he set new German junior records in four disciplines in the 15/16 age group. His impressive times: 2:01.66 minutes in the 200 meter steeplechase and 0:30.58 seconds in the 50 meter save. These outstanding results crowned him the best all-rounder in his age group and secured him the nomination for the DLRG national team at the International German Cup, which will take place on November 22nd and 23rd in Warendorf.

For the girls, Xenia Schröder continued her winning streak in the AK 17/18 and remains undefeated since her debut in 2019. Lena Oppermann also celebrated her fourth title in a row in the open age group. The DLRG Luckenwalde secured victory among the local divisions, followed by DLRG Halle-Saalekreis and DLRG Norderstedt. The excitement and fighting spirit of the athletes make this competition an unforgettable event in rescue sports!
