After 50 years: Popular Eskimo ice cream disappears forever!
The popular Eskimo ice cream, a chocolate ice cream on a stick that has been a staple on menus in Austria since 1973, is no longer produced. After Eskimo removed the family pack from its range last year, the chocolate ice cream has now also been removed from the range. According to Kosmo, the Unilever-owned manufacturer attributes the discontinuation to limited freezer space and reduced demand. The move comes as no surprise as overall demand for ice cream in Austria has seen notable fluctuations in recent years.
The ice cream, which has been popular for decades, can no longer be found on Eskimo's official website, which indicates that production has finally stopped. Unilever, headquartered in London, sells the product lines under various brand names in different countries, including Wall's in the UK and Langnese in Germany. The decisions to adjust the range are usually made at an international level, which affects market dynamics.
Growth of the ice cream market
While Eskimo ice cream is now history, the European ice cream market as a whole is seeing growth. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market will witness a CAGR of 4.87% from 2019 to 2029, indicating the increasing demand for low-fat and natural ice creams. Consumers are increasingly preferring premium ice creams with special flavors and higher butterfat content. This trend toward “premiumization” highlights the changing consumer behavior in the ice cream segment.
In Austria, Unilever has a significant market position and plans to introduce new ice cream flavors. According to Retail Report, Unilever will present new ice cream flavors such as Magnum, Cornetto and Cremissimo starting this week. Sales in the food trade have more than doubled since 2010, with a forecast of 280 million euros for 2024. This development shows that despite the discontinuation of products such as Eskimo ice cream, demand for new and innovative varieties remains strong.
Particular opportunities for the future lie in the area of snacking and conscious choice, especially when it comes to vegan products, which are increasingly entering the mainstream. Unilever plans to introduce several new products in 2025, including Magnum Utopia and new Cornetto and Cremissimo flavors. These innovations could further drive interest in ice cream and help expand the consumer base.
