Neubrandenburg is committed to diversity: the rainbow flag returns!
Things are boiling in Neubrandenburg! After a heated argument about the rainbow flag, the city council took a dramatic turnaround and made a clear commitment to cosmopolitanism, tolerance and diversity. At Wednesday's meeting, 24 of 33 council members called on the city administration to develop proposals on how these values can be made visible in the four-gate city. This happened just four weeks after the decision was made to stop flying the rainbow flag in front of the station.
The decision has far-reaching consequences! The city council has now decided that the rainbow flag can be flown within the city again. Mayor Thomas Gesswein expressed optimism and stated: “I assume that we will see the rainbow flag there [Neubrandenburg train station] again next year.” Around 80 supporters gathered in front of the conference building to advocate for the new resolution. The city administration should present a concept by May 2025 to effectively present Neubrandenburg's cosmopolitanism.
A motion that was withdrawn
The discussion about the rainbow flag has heated up tempers in Neubrandenburg and shows how important the issue of tolerance and diversity is for citizens. The city now faces the challenge of developing a concept that does justice to these values and at the same time takes citizens' opinions into account.
