Fight for biodiversity: Hunters focus on improving habitat!
In 2024, the Grafschafter hunters' association is actively committed to biotope improvement and predation management to protect endangered species.

Fight for biodiversity: Hunters focus on improving habitat!
This year, the Grafschafter hunting community has shown a strong commitment to habitat improvement and predation management. A key problem is the sudden spread of myxomatosis among brown hares, which means hunters have to become even more active in order to protect wild animal populations. Thanks to the support of over 50 thermal imaging drones, the hunters are helping to preserve animals such as ground-nesting birds and unprotected young during sensitive spring agricultural work, as these often overlap with the birth dates of various wild animals, such as ems-vechte-surfer.de reported.
Another aspect of predation management is the use of special trap detectors and live traps. This year, 220 trap detectors and 133 live traps were purchased to control predatory mammals such as foxes and martens, which pose a threat to endangered bird species such as the curlew and the lapwing. The increase in the population of these predators is an alarming phenomenon, promoted by the successful control of rabies and the constant availability of food, such as biotopfonds.de explained. The hunters plan to expand these measures to stabilize and preserve wildlife populations, while at the same time biodiversity projects such as the creation of beetle banks to create habitats have been launched as a pilot test.
Focus on the habitat
By creating new structures in the field, the number of insects, birds and other wild animals is to be promoted. The Beetle Bank was conceived as an innovative concept in which special strips are created between fields to provide a habitat for insects and other animal species. While positive results are already known from similar projects in Germany, the hunters' commitment is also being translated into new hedge plantings in ash. These measures aim to strengthen the connections between different habitats and thus maintain the wildlife population sustainably. At a time when many species are threatened, the protection and enrichment of habitats is more urgent than ever.
