Kaltenbronn: New measures save the threatened Hohlohmoor!

In Kaltenbronn, one of the last intact raised moors in Germany, nature is facing a dramatic challenge! The Hohlohmoor is highly endangered and suffers from an extreme lack of water - 90 percent of the original moor has already dried out. In order to counteract this threatening situation, the project is now... Moor revitalization Kaltenbronn-Hohlohmoor (MooReKa) was launched, which is intended to bring more water to the moor landscape in the long term.

Fight against drought!

The solution? Old drainage channels that were once intended to dry out the moor are now blocked! The dramatic water shortage must be stopped. As a first step, eleven barriers will be built in the Hohlohmoor in order to tame the rainwater and ensure that it is slowly released into the valley. “If we don’t hold back the water here, then this moor will simply be destroyed,” warns the Karlsruhe regional council. These measures are crucial to ensure the survival of these unique habitats for humans and animals.

Particularly innovative: Special moor excavators are used during the construction work, which are designed so that they hardly put any strain on the ground! “We want to proceed as carefully as possible,” explains Daniel Raddatz, head of the nature conservation department. The first tests with four test barriers in 2020 showed that these barriers can quickly fill with water. More than 1,000 ditch closures are now planned to close a total of 35 kilometers of historic drainage ditches. Around 75 percent of the costs of 8.7 million euros will be borne by the EU. The work should be completed by 2028!
