Social impact of violent crime
This is not the first incident of its kind and the societal impact of violent crime is significant. Violent crimes in Germany account for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, but they have a major impact on the population's sense of security. In 2024, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in Germany, the highest number since 2007. After a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of violent crimes has been rising again since 2021.
Analyzes show that economic uncertainty and social stress can contribute to an increase in violent crime. A third of the suspects in these violent crimes are under 21 years old, and the annual number of victims of violence is around 260,000. While the police were able to successfully solve acts of violence in a good three quarters of the cases, the issue remains a major problem that is fully recognized in society. According to a survey from May 2024, 94% of Germans consider violence against people from politics, police and rescue services to be a major problem, as Statista reports.
