More and more Hessians are planning their own funeral: the new trend!
More and more people are demanding the right to organize their own funeral! According to the Hessian undertakers' association, this is a growing trend. Guido Vaupel, the association's second chairman, reports that most people deal intensively with the topic of death and have clear ideas about how they would like to organize their final journey. These wishes are recorded in so-called precautionary discussions, in which everything from the color of the coffin to the obituary notice is planned in detail. Vaupel, who has worked in the funeral industry for 40 years, emphasizes: “When the person dies, we know exactly what to do.”
What is particularly noteworthy is that not only older people but also many young and healthy people come to these discussions. Matthias Föhner from “In Memories”, a funeral home in Hesse, confirms this trend and explains that people are increasingly thinking about their funeral early on. One man even left a personal voicemail to be played at his funeral. The desire for participation could also be related to the fact that many people are single or their relatives live far away.
Low-maintenance gravesites are trending
Another notable trend is the increasing demand for easy-care gravesites. More and more people want their graves to require little care. A simple plaque with the name is often chosen, so that extensive grave maintenance is no longer necessary. This development is particularly evident in urn walls, tree burials and meadow graves. Vaupel explains: “That’s where the trend is going.” The funeral industry adapts to people's wishes and offers individual solutions for the final resting place.
