Hamburg's companies achieve a 1.3 billion surplus - but warnings remain!
Hamburg's municipal companies can cheer! In 2023, the city will have achieved an impressive surplus of 1.3 billion euros, as Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD) has now revealed. But the joy could be deceptive, because without Hapag-Lloyd's massive profit share, which amounted to an impressive 1.5 billion euros, the balance sheet would have reached the red mark!
Hapag-Lloyd as a lifesaver of the balance sheet
The numbers speak volumes: While around 360 holdings, including the Hochbahn and the Elbkinder daycare centers, are part of the Hamburg city network of companies and employ over 75,000 people, the success of Hapag-Lloyd has saved the city. Finance Senator Dressel makes it clear: “No one in the Hamburg group can rest on their laurels on the Hapag-Lloyd profits.” This is a clear indication that caution is required and the profitability of the other companies must be checked. Risk analyzes should now be carried out more strictly in order to identify potential dangers at an early stage.
Investment and environmental protection on the rise
The positive news doesn't stop! Investments by public companies have increased to a massive three billion euros. Dressel describes this as “a very strong performance” that ultimately benefits the real economy. These funds flow into orders for companies in Hamburg and the surrounding area, which creates jobs. And Hamburg is also showing commitment to environmental protection: 27 city companies are planning to become climate neutral by 2040 and will soon present their strategies for this.
