Autonomous buses will soon start in Eimsbüttel: test operation from 2025!

Eimsbüttel, Deutschland - Hamburg faces a revolutionary change in public transport! From the middle of next year, Eimsbüttel will become a test site for autonomous passenger transport. The ambitious “Project Alike” is expected to expand the offer of public transport for over three years, in which accessible vehicles are traveling in the districts. The Hamburg Hochbahn has committed itself to the management of this groundbreaking project.

With a funding of 26 million euros from the federal government, the project is supported. The Hochbahn plans to use HONBUSSES of the Holon brand, which offer space for up to 15 people. Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, describes Ridepooling as an innovative mix of taxi and bus, which is supposed to create an attractive alternative to your own car. The mobility service provider Moia will also be part of the project with its smaller vehicles for four people.

test drives and social acceptance

The test drives are expected to begin in mid -2025 in a clearly defined area, which includes Harvestehude, Rotherbaum and the area of the street at Schlump. The aim is to test the technical implementation of autonomous driving and to explore social acceptance. A representative survey has already started to find out how the public reacts to these new means of transport and what needs must be taken into account in further development.

The first test drives are carried out with selected groups of people. While the trips with Moia are expected to begin in mid -2025, the high railway offer with Holon does not start until early 2026. In both cases, security drivers are used to ensure the safety of the test subjects.
