New Parnass Square in Eimsbüttel: A place to remember and linger

A new square in Eimsbüttel is now called “Parnass-Platz” and commemorates the tragic fate of Hertha and Simon Parnass, who were murdered during National Socialism. The redesign of the square, which will be officially inaugurated on October 28, 2023, is the result of two resolutions by the Eimsbüttel district assembly, which go back to the “Superbüttel” initiative. This initiative aims to create more green and recreational spaces in the city and encourage pedestrian traffic. The square was redesigned for around 25,000 euros: parking stalls were removed, bicycle racks were installed, and an inviting combination of plants and benches was set up.

A place of remembrance

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, emphasizes the importance of the new square as a memorial against anti-Semitism and in memory of the Parnass family. “Parnassus Square will remind us of the brutal way in which families were torn apart under National Socialism,” explained Brosda. Falk Schmidt-Tobler, chairman of the district assembly, is pleased about the creation of a place of remembrance in the middle of the densely populated area and emphasizes that the daughter of the murdered woman, Peggy Parnass, will take part in the inauguration. This highlights the emotional connection to history and the importance of remembrance.

However, the transformation is just the beginning. In the coming year, residents will be actively involved in the planning to further enliven the square. Ideas such as additional greenery, play equipment and artistic design are being discussed. In the long term, a comprehensive redesign of the entire Langenfelder Damm/Methfesselstrasse intersection area is planned in order to further improve the quality of stay in the district. Sonja Böseler, deputy district manager, emphasizes that the redesign not only implements a decision, but also creates a lively city square that strengthens the community.
