New Parnass-Platz in Eimsbüttel: a place of remembering and lingering

A new place in Eimsbüttel now bears the name "Parnass-Platz" and is reminiscent of the tragic fate of Hertha and Simon Parnass, which were murdered during National Socialism. The redesign of the square, which is officially inaugurated on October 28, 2023, is the result of two decisions of the district assembly Eimsbüttel, which go back to the "Superbüttel" initiative. This initiative aims to create more green and relaxation rooms in the city and to promote foot traffic. The space was redesigned for around 25,000 euros: parking spaces were removed, bicycle brackets were installed, and an inviting combination of plants and benches was set up.

a place of commemoration

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, emphasizes the importance of the new place as a memorial to anti -Semitism and to remember the Parnass family. "Parnass-Platz will remind us of the brutal wise families in National Socialism," said Brosda. Falk Schmidt-Tobler, chairman of the district assembly, is pleased about the creation of a remembrance in the middle of the densely populated neighborhood and emphasizes that the daughter of the murdered, Peggy Parnass, will take part in the inauguration. This underlines the emotional connection to the history and the importance of commemoration.

However, the redesign is only the beginning. In the coming year, residents are to be actively involved in planning in order to further revitalize the square. Ideas such as additional greening, play equipment and artistic design are in the room. In the long term, a comprehensive redesign of the entire crossing area Langenfelder Damm/Methfesselstraße is planned in order to further increase the quality of stay in the neighborhood. Sonja Böseler, deputy district manager, emphasizes that the redesign not only implemented a decision, but also created a lively town square that strengthens the community.
