Gertrud Oertel turns 110: A life full of memories and stories!
A very special event is being celebrated in Michendorf: Gertrud Oertel, who will be 110 years old on November 11th! This remarkable anniversary is accompanied by a historic photo showing her as a mischievous twelve-year-old girl in Lake Hertha. The picture dates from 1927 and shows a group of children splashing happily in the water. Gertrud, second from the right, beams with joy. An image that not only brings back memories, but also tells the story of Lake Hertha, which has blossomed again since it was renatured in 2023.
Gertrud Oertel is only a year younger than the oldest person in Germany, and her nephew Klaus Oertel is proud of his aunt's remarkable life story. Born during the First World War, she experienced Germany's turbulent history first hand. “She is still interested in politics and also watches the news on television,” says Klaus. Her memories are vivid and she has experienced a lot, from her work in the pulmonary sanatorium to dramatic experiences during the Second World War.

Gertrud Oertel, who now lives in a senior citizens' facility in Berlin, has a big heart. She took in a child in a home and raised it like a daughter. Her joy for life is contagious and she is planning three celebrations for her 110th birthday to welcome all her well-wishers. “It’s slowly getting enough,” she sometimes says, but the will to live is strong. Her nephew can't wait to congratulate her and is already looking forward to next year when she celebrates her 111th birthday.
