Women's gang terrorizes Austria: 27 raids and high damage!
In Austria, a thieving gang makes headlines that caused considerable damage in five -digit amount with stolen ATM cards. The group of pickpocketing has committed a total of 27 thefts in several cities such as Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Mödling, as Kosmo reported. The investigation started in January after two perpetrators in Salzburg became striking.
In May, a 44-year-old main suspect was arrested with Dutch and Bosnian citizenship in Vienna. In the meantime, four accomplices are still fleeting, and the police have initiated searches in cooperation with the state criminal offices of several federal states and internationally. There is indications that the gang could be part of a larger, cross -border network.
methods of the thieves gang
The perpetrators acted in busy areas, specifically visited shopping centers and public transport to choose their victims. They paid particular attention to observing the PIN codes of the ATM cards during the payment process or finding note slips with the codes in stolen wallets. Such thefts are often committed by international perpetrators who appear in groups and show a calm, prudent presence so as not to attract attention, like Austria.gv.at added.
High risk locations for pickpocketing are large events, markets and public transport. Women in particular have to be taken into account, since they become more frequent victims of such crimes compared to men. Handbags are much easier to access than bags in clothing, which attracts the thieves.
prevention measures
The police and prevention measures recommend better protecting valuable objects. It is advisable to distribute valuables over several bags and not to carry too much cash. Round exchanges should always be kept in front pants or inner pockets and handbags (especially with magnetic closures) should always be worn in front of the body. Special caution is advised in the crowd, whereby simple behavioral measures can help to secure themselves, according to the information of the Federal Police .
The police crime statistics for Germany listed over 109,000 pickpockets displayed in 2023, which shows that this type of crime is widespread. The total damage amounted to over 52 million euros, but only about 6.9 percent of the cases could be informed. This underlines the urgency to protect themselves from such thefts.
