Icy times in Nuremberg: Stairs remain closed until April!
In the next few days, winter will have a firm grip on Nuremberg, and the public space service company (Sör) is ready to clear snow and ice from streets, bridges and most sidewalks. But be careful! There is no winter service on sidewalks that are difficult to access and especially on stairs. The city has made it clear that the cost of clearing stairs is much higher and time-consuming compared to streets and sidewalks. This means that many citizens have to be prepared for longer detours in order to reach their destination safely.
Stairs remain closed!
In order to make the winter work efficient, numerous staircases in the city area will be closed. As every year, the stairs that are not cleared will be provided with red and white barriers and marked with a “No winter service” sign. These closures will remain in place until early April 2024, even during extended frost-free periods. The city appeals to citizens not to move the barriers on their own in order to gain access to the closed stairs. A call for patience: Longer journeys are unavoidable in this cold season!
Sör's employees have to clear and secure around 3,600 kilometers of roads, 300 kilometers of sidewalks and cycle paths and 6,100 pedestrian crossings every day in snowy and icy conditions. The decision to exclude stairs from winter maintenance is sure to spark debate as the city prepares for the challenges of winter!
