Baby squirrel saves itself from death – appeal to tree lovers!

A heartwarming incident recently occurred in the Salzburg/Upper Austria border region when an injured baby squirrel was found by a cat and taken to the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter. The little animal had fallen from its nest and arrived in critical condition with closed eyes and hypothermia. “Our veterinarian was able to stabilize the little one and I have been raising him with the bottle ever since,” reports Johanna Stadler, the managing director of Pfotenhilfe, who has already successfully raised numerous young animals from mice to foxes oe24 reported.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case. Every year, many squirrel mothers lose their young, especially due to tree felling in spring, which triggers panicked flight reactions. These panicked escapes often cause the young to fall from their nests and often starve if they are not found in time. “We urgently appeal to only cut trees in autumn and winter,” said Stadler. These practices not only harm squirrels but also other wildlife such as birds and insects. For this reason, pruning of trees and hedges is prohibited by law in Germany from March 1st to September 30th - protection that the Austrian region urgently needs ots highlighted. “It is incomprehensible why there is no such thing in Austria,” notes Stadler and calls for better protection for these helpless animals and a rethinking of tree pruning.
