The electronic patient record (ePA) from 2025: advantages, security and digital change in healthcare for all insured persons.

E-files in the healthcare system: opportunities and fears of the people of Nuremberg!

From 2025, the electronic patient record (ePA) will revolutionize the healthcare system - but consumers are still worried about their data! In emergency situations, vital information about a person may be missing. For example, if a patient is admitted to the Nuremberg Nord Clinic with serious injuries, the treating doctor often lacks crucial knowledge about allergies or medications. “I don’t know anything else about him,” says senior physician Arnim Geise, describing the dramatic situation.

With the introduction of the ePA, the hope is for a smoother flow of information. Oxygen masks instead of stacks of paper, the digital files should be available in clinics, doctor's offices and pharmacies from January 2025. The national agency for digital medicine, Gematik, is implementing this innovative step and making Franconia a model region for the introduction. The insurance card will take on the key role in access to important health data!

Safety concerns of the insured

While many doctors, such as general practitioner Nicolas Kahl, have high hopes for the advantages of the ePA, the issue of data security remains a thorn in the side of consumers. Jürgen Kretschmer from the Munich health shop emphasizes the high safety requirements. “There is no safer construction in all of Europe than the German one!” By mid-2025, all doctors and clinics will have to fill their patient files with current treatment data. Anyone who wants to forego the ePA for personal reasons must actively object - and this is best done in writing for clear proof.

The federal government is planning an ambitious goal: 80 percent of those with statutory health insurance should use the ePA! The health insurance companies are already informing their members about this new digital option, while patients can object to the installation of the electronic file by simply objecting. A clear call to action – especially for everyone who believes data protection is irrefutable!
