Bronze relief revealed: Zossen's story comes to life!
A bronze relief was recently unveiled in Zossen showing the city's former castle and fortress. The celebratory event opened in historical style with a cannon shot. The installation is located in the immediate vicinity of the Trinity Church, on a pedestal next to a peace oak tree, and offers visitors and locals an impressive view of the region's history.
The event attracted numerous guests, including city residents, members of the Alter Krug local history association and those interested in politics. Karola Andrae, the chairwoman of the local history association, welcomed those present and spoke about the important time of the excavations that took place at the Zossen market four years ago. These historical excavations were the origin of the idea of creating a relief, as the initiator Thomas Krause described.
The roots of the project
The archaeologist Ulrich Wiegmann gave exciting insights into the creation of Zossen Castle and the historical background that is important for the design of the relief. In his presentation, he conveyed the basics that were necessary to reconstruct the castle complex from the 17th century true to the original.
Mayor Wiebke Sahin-Connolly (FDP) praised the tireless work of the local history association and the municipality that made it possible to realize this work of art. “The bronze relief is a great gift to our city that reminds us of our historical roots and strengthens the community,” she explained at the unveiling.
Financing the project was a challenge as no funds were included in the city's budget. The local history association collected donations to realize the work of art. Krause spoke with great passion about the two years of hard work that went into the detailed design, while the audience responded to the unveiling with loud applause.
Medieval festivities and food
The celebratory event was accompanied by a medieval festival, where visitors enjoyed traditional dishes such as soup goulash and pumpkin specialties. A special highlight was the “Burgbier” brewed especially for this occasion by the Zossen brewery Gäbert, which was offered in a limited edition of 200 bottles.
Michael Roch, responsible for city marketing, is convinced that the bronze relief is not only a cultural milestone for Zossen, but also embodies the population's connection to their history. He noted that it will become a popular meeting place for locals and visitors.
The unveiling of the relief in Zossen brings the past to life and is a visible testimony to the rich history of the region. The work of art will now have a permanent presence on the church square and the story of Zossen will continue to be told.
