Vienna achieves solar power target early: A ray of hope for the future!
With 252 MWp, Vienna will reach its 2025 photovoltaic target ahead of schedule and is planning 800 MWp by 2030 – a milestone for climate protection.
Vienna achieves solar power target early: A ray of hope for the future!
Vienna did it! Ten months earlier than planned, the city is reaching its ambitious goal of 250 megawatt peak (MWp) of installed solar power output, which would be enough to supply 72,000 households with green electricity. In just five years, the output has increased more than fivefold from the initial 50 MWp. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) proudly emphasizes that this achievement not only represents a significant step towards climate neutrality, but also saves more than 57,000 tons of CO2 annually. This was announced in a press conference in the town hall oe24.at reported.
Under the motto “Solar Power Capital,” Vienna’s offensive is being driven forward through a combination of easier permits, attractive subsidies and comprehensive advisory services. Since 2024, photovoltaic systems of up to 15 kWp can be built on roofs without a permit. In order to do justice to the booming installations, a funding offensive with a budget of 15 million euros was launched, which will be continued this year. How ots.at reported, Vienna is the only federal state that promotes PV systems for both private and business users from the first kilowatt hour.
A role model for the future
The impressive progress in the Vienna photovoltaics offensive shows how far-reaching the measures are. According to Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky, the output should be tripled to 800 MWp by 2030, which would mean enough electricity for a quarter of all Viennese households. The success is not only due to the resources invested, but also to the broad support of the population and companies. Over 70 companies have already joined the initiative to actively support the expansion. This cooperation should continue to be groundbreaking for a clean and independent energy future.
In summary, Vienna's solar power offensive is more than just an environmental project; it is a step towards a more sustainable, livable future for all Viennese. The progress in photovoltaics shows that the city is determined to invest in renewable energies and wants to be a pioneer in Austria.
