Immune defenses in autumn: Why some people get sick faster!
Sick in autumn – why does it happen to some people every year? Bremen family doctor Holger Schelp reveals the secrets surrounding the common colds this time of year. Good genes alone are not the panacea - diet, stress and lifestyle also play a crucial role!
Holger Schelp, who heads the group practice in Bremen-Huchting and is chairman of the Bremen General Practitioners Association, knows the concerns of many patients only too well. “Some come back to the practice just in time for colds,” he explains. Not only does he see the “regulars,” but he also sees many who he barely notices until they come back with seasonal complaints. The number of encounters with viruses is particularly high in autumn - and genetics and lifestyle habits also play a central role here.
Nutrition & Stress: The Keys to Robust Health
“Good nutrition is essential,” says Schelp, pointing out the benefits of a regular sleep rhythm and a varied diet. Apples and the like are therefore not only good for the conscience, but important for the immune system, which has to be particularly active in the cold season. But the fateful encounter with viruses can also affect even the best among us - especially if the body is weak.
“Stress also plays a fatal role,” warns Schelp. Prolonged exhaustion lowers the immune system enormously. Positive stress factors, such as an exciting project or praise at work, can even provide short-term motivation and strengthen the immune system. But when the hectic phase ends and calm returns, fatigue often returns - then the body is susceptible to infections.
With increasing age, the susceptibility to diseases also increases. “The immune system weakens and infections can take a long time to heal,” says Schelp. That's why he advises older patients to get regular vaccinations against flu etc. - a precautionary measure that pays off in preventing serious illnesses. It remains exciting to see what role recovery and preventative measures will actually play in the fall virus season!
Holger Schelp appeals to the population to be careful and to seek medical treatment in good time if symptoms occur.
