Commemoration in Bremen: Vigil for the victims of Kristallnacht

On November 8, 2024, in Bremen and Bremerhaven, the terrible Kristallnacht pogrom will be commemorated, which claimed countless Jewish lives 86 years ago and brought a wave of destruction to Jewish communities. Moving ceremonies commemorate the victims who were brutally murdered on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, while shops and synagogues went up in flames.

In the picturesque Schnoor district of Bremen, members of the citizenry and the Senate gather to commemorate the victims. The German head of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Anastassia Pletoukhina, will give a powerful speech. She herself survived the anti-Semitic attack on the synagogue in Halle in 2019 and will speak at the memorial in front of the Landherrnamt to keep the memory of the five murdered Jewish citizens in Bremen alive.

Commemorative events in Bremerhaven and Lower Saxony

In Bremerhaven, State Rabbi Netanel Teitelbaum will say the Kaddish, the traditional prayer for the deceased, in the afternoon at the memorial stone for the Old Synagogue, which was burned down during the night of the pogrom. Commemorative activities are also taking place in Lower Saxony, including a memorial hour in the state parliament at which Holocaust survivor Leon Weintraub will speak. Representatives of Jewish communities in Lower Saxony will also be present to commemorate the terrible events together.
