Students excited: school trip to Bratislava with the Twin City Liner!

A special school trip for students from the Fichtnergasse high school started on June 18, 2025. They won the main prize in the quiz format to strengthen climate awareness, which took place as part of the first W24 “Climate Show” at the “48er Tandler” in Vienna Margareten at the end of 2024. The prize included a trip on the Twin City Liner to Bratislava, which was ceremoniously farewelled by Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky. The departure took place on June 17, 2025 and the students were enthusiastic about the upcoming trip.

The trip on the high-speed catamaran, whose route runs between the old town of Vienna and the Slovakian capital Bratislava, took 75 minutes. During their stay in Bratislava, the students were able to explore the old town, visit the castle and enjoy time for shopping and an ice cream. They began their return journey at 2:30 p.m. and reached Vienna's Schwedenplatz in time for classes to end at 4:00 p.m.

Climate protection and mobility

When saying goodbye, Climate City Councilor Czernohorszky emphasized the importance of the issue of climate for young people and the need to take the environment into account in mobility. Managing Director of Central Danube, which operates the Twin City Liner, highlighted the energy efficiency of the catamaran, which has been in operation since the 2019 season and has a photovoltaic system. The Twin City Liner is not only modern, but also environmentally friendly and offers space for up to 250 people.

With the Twin City Liner school promotion, school classes receive a 50% discount on trips during the week. The catamaran, which travels daily from Vienna to Bratislava at 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and back at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., is also equipped with 12 bike holders, which enables combined travel with bicycles. There is also the Euro Velo 6 cycle path, which leads from Vienna to Bratislava and offers cultural highlights along the route.

Accompanying educational projects

The topic of sustainable mobility is not only promoted through school trips, but also through educational projects such as those offered in the publication “Climate Change”. These projects include lessons about the CO2 emissions of different modes of transport and help students choose sustainable travel destinations. This also includes planning climate-friendly school trips and conducting surveys about preferred modes of transport among students' families.

In the discussion about environmentally friendly means of transport, the importance of electric mobility and the use of bicycles is also pointed out. Schools are encouraged to hold project days that not only address the traffic situation in the school environment, but also present and discuss creative solutions, such as car-free cities. These educational approaches help raise awareness of climate protection and further develop practical solutions.

Future generations should not only be informed, but also be able to actively participate in climate protection. The Twin City Liner is an excellent example of environmentally conscious mobility that can inspire young people to make environmentally friendly decisions in their everyday lives.
