Expansion and surveys in the old town garage
In addition to the structural changes, survey results show an interesting use of the garage: Over 35 percent of users come from Germany and primarily use the parking lot for leisure activities in the old town. This data came from a survey that students at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences conducted between August and December 2019 among 876 people SN.at reported. The managing director of the parking garages, Alfred Denk, sees the survey results as encouraging in his expansion plans. Despite the high use of over 800,000 cars annually, there is still a discussion about transport policy: local councilor Lukas Uitz criticized the high parking tariffs, which could make it difficult to redirect to public transport.
The renovation of the Karajan Gang will not only help improve accessibility, but also enhance the ambience of the old town garage. Sattler describes the future corridor as “wider and beautiful”, with more light and space, which should significantly improve the visitor experience in the city center. Despite existing criticism of the expansion plans, the Altstadtgarage remains a central starting point for many who visit Salzburg, be it for shopping or for cultural events.
