Brandenburg warns: New signs show caution, wolf territory!

“Attention, wolf territory”

Brandenburg sounds the alarm about the wolf!

In Brandenburg, where wolves are most commonly found, a new warning system is now used to alert the population to possible encounters with these shy but impressive animals. The Seelow-Land office in the Märkisch-Oderland district has decided to put up signs warning of wolves. These signs, labeled “Caution, Wolf Area,” will be installed on main paths around a forest area in November. A novelty for the region, as the State Environment Agency has not yet issued any such warnings.

The reason for this initiative? A wolf killed a deer in the village of Gusow about a month ago. Robert Schulz, the department's wolf commissioner, said it was unusual for a shy animal like the wolf to venture so close to human settlements. The signs are not intended to cause panic, but rather to raise awareness among citizens and minimize potential threats to public safety. The response to this measure has been overwhelmingly positive, and Schulz emphasizes that a wolf pack has been resident in the region for several years.

Wolves nearby – what does that mean?

The discussion about the possible danger posed by wolves repeatedly causes uncertainty among the population. While direct encounters between humans and wolves are rare, the animals can occasionally cross settlements. Wolves are strictly protected in Germany and are not allowed to be hunted, which further complicates the situation. The Federal Environment Ministry makes it clear that the danger of wolves near people should not be overestimated, but the installation of the signs shows that the authorities are taking the situation seriously and want to inform citizens. Brandenburg remains the state with the highest wolf population in Germany - a fascinating but also challenging interaction between humans and nature!
