High blood pressure as the main cause: How to reduce your risk of dementia!

In Germany, an alarming 1.8 million people suffer from dementia, and forecasts say that this number could rise to a shocking 2.8 million by 2050! The fear of the nerve disease is therefore understandable, especially since the most common form, Alzheimer's, cannot be cured. Scientists are now focusing on the key risk factors in order to actively protect brain health.

Based on a comprehensive analysis of 27 studies, researchers found that five preventative measures are essential to reducing the risk of dementia. The main threats are: diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and education levels. Blood pressure-related risks in particular are closely related to the clinical picture and are the focus of research because they have been identified as the greatest risk factor for the development of dementia.

Target risk factors

Scientists from University College London emphasize that one in two dementias can potentially be prevented or delayed by being active! This makes it all the more important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and treat essential medical risk factors. The Alzheimer Research Initiative recommends concrete measures to reduce your own risk of dementia: regular exercise, social interaction and the treatment of diseases such as high blood pressure and cholesterol fluctuations.

It is extremely worrying because while Alzheimer's primarily manifests itself through memory loss, other forms of dementia can have more far-reaching effects on the personality! And while we need to pay attention to the cardiovascular risks, a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining one's brain function in the long term and preventing one of the dreaded diseases.
