Protest against Amazon Tower: Rents in Friedrichshain are exploding!

In Berlin, where political discourse is often dominated by pressing issues, there is also space for culture and action. On Monday, the Danish royal couple, Frederik X and Queen Mary, are expected in the capital, where they will be received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. But while the royal visit is being remembered, another pressing issue remains in the shadows: Denmark's restrictive migration policy, which is causing concern among German politicians. Here the monarchy is seen primarily as a symbolic event, while the real political questions across borders are more stressful.

However, in Friedrichshain, where resistance to displacement and rising rents remains high, anti-fascists are meeting on Monday evening for an information evening organized by the Lichtenberg anti-fascist network. Strategies against right-wing agitation and the current situation of refugees in the region are discussed here. Such events are particularly important because the shift to the right is also noticeable in Berlin and it is necessary to mobilize civil society.

Activities and protests in Berlin

On Wednesday there is a night flea market in the legendary club SO36, which is especially intended for creative minds and night owls. From 8 p.m., visitors can browse for bargains and get support from social counseling at the same time. An ideal evening for everyone who often loses sleep during the weekly markets.

Saturday will then be marked by resistance. From 4:30 p.m. there will be a protest against the opening of the Amazon Tower on the Warsaw Bridge. This demonstration is clearly directed against displacement and rising rents in the city. The participants gather together at Schleidenplatz to raise their voices against the effects of gentrification, which is leaving many long-time residents behind.

At the same time, history enthusiasts can come to the Oranienburg Castle Museum on Friday for a speed dating event. This new concept from the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation not only offers the opportunity to get to know each other, but also to take a look at the history of the region. The Danish royals won't be there, but the royal flair will remain.

In these tense times, when right-wing extremism continues to gain ground, it is more important than ever to advocate for an open and tolerant society. The taz supports the Polylux network, which actively works against the shift to the right in East Germany and promotes projects that promote democracy and tolerance. This solidarity and support is essential for maintaining a diverse civil society in which everyone has a voice.
