Cold bus burned down in Moabit: Who is behind the arson?
On the night of December 28, 2025, a Berlin City Mission cold bus was destroyed by suspected arson in Moabit, Berlin. The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Seydlitzstrasse, where a witness observed an unknown person staying near the cold buses. Shortly afterwards the bus burst into flames, as fireworld.at reports. The fire brigade was able to completely extinguish the fire, but the front area of the bus was almost completely burned out. A second, adjacent bus was also damaged but is repairable.
The police have started an investigation into arson because the situation for homeless people in Berlin is particularly tense. With the freezing temperatures, the need for cold buses is extremely high, as many homeless people are dependent on help on the bitterly cold nights. There are a total of four refrigerated buses in Berlin, three of which belong to the city mission and one to the German Red Cross (DRK). According to Welt.de, the city mission now has to resort to a minibus with a wheelchair ramp at short notice in order to maintain supplies.
Urgent appeal for donations
The Berlin City Mission is urgently asking for donations to purchase a new refrigerated bus and to repair the damaged bus. It is estimated that over 2,100 people received safe and warm accommodation through the cold buses last winter. On cold nights, an average of over 120 calls are received seeking help. The city mission's volunteers, numbering around 60 people, distribute sleeping bags, hot tea and soup or transport homeless people to emergency shelters if they wish.
“With only two refrigerated buses, we cannot offer the complete help that would be required,” said a spokeswoman for the city mission. The estimated need is also reflected in the calls, as not all homeless people want to go to an emergency shelter; many are well provided with a sleeping bag and a warm drink. According to Tagesspiegel a donation account has already been set up: IBAN: DE67 3702 0500 0003 1555 00.
