200 years of Museum Island: Berlin celebrates with a big anniversary program!

In 2025, the Museum Island in Berlin will celebrate an important anniversary – its 200th anniversary. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) has announced a variety of events and activities that will take place over a period of five years until 2030. This was officially announced after the first stone of the Altes Museum was laid on July 9, 1825 by the well-known architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has taken over the patronage of the celebrations, while Hermann Parzinger, President of the SPK, emphasizes that the program focuses on cultural education, especially for Berlin school classes who are supposed to visit the Museum Island the Berliner Zeitung reported.

Diverse programs and exhibitions

The highlights of the anniversary program include several special exhibitions that will be presented in 2025. Under the title "Foundation Stone Antiquity. Berlin's First Museum" the architecture and history of the Old Museum is explored. Also on the program is the exhibition "Myths in Stone. Göbeklitepe and the World of the Last Hunters", which provides insights into the ancient UNESCO World Heritage site, while the Alte Nationalgalerie will show the "Scharf Collection" with works by renowned artists such as Goya and Monet. In addition, the reopening of the Kolonnaden Bar and the UFA film nights, which show classic films in the open air, have been announced according to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

The entire program aims to attract visitors from near and far while celebrating the historical roots of the Museum Island - an interplay of impressive architecture and incredible collections that have survived many generations since its opening. The Museum Island, a masterpiece of the early 19th century, showcases architecture by outstanding architects such as Schinkel and his successors and remains a central location for art and culture in Germany.
