Preacher from Weiden in court: hate speech against Jews uncovered

MUNICH. In an explosive development, the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office has brought charges of sedition against a 37-year-old Muslim preacher from Weiden in the Upper Palatinate. The reason for the accusation are statements that the preacher is said to have made in October 2023 during a speech in the Weiden mosque, the “Islamic Center Weiden”. Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that the preacher incited hatred against Jews in his speech.

In the sermon in question, the preacher is said to have called on the assembled believers - around 50 people - to kill Jews. He also expressed his wishes for the victory of the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel and at the same time invoked God several times to support calls for violence against Jews.

Background to the accusation

The security authorities gave the decisive clue to the preacher's dangerous statements. The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring the Salafist-influenced mosque for some time and has included the case in the current Office for the Protection of the Constitution report from 2023. Such surveillance measures demonstrate the increased risk posed by extremist speech and are part of a larger strategy to protect public safety in Germany.

The developments surrounding the preacher are particularly significant because they raise questions about religious freedom. The defendant came to Germany from Aleppo in 2015, and it is now up to the Weiden district court to decide whether the lawsuit is admissible. In doing so, it must also take into account the fundamental right to religious freedom, which protects the preacher's prayer. Nevertheless, there are clear limits to religious freedom, especially when the statements push other people's right to life into the background.

This case is sparking discussions among the general public about extremism and the limits of religious expression in Germany. The fact that the case is being discussed in the context of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution underlines the importance of continued monitoring of potentially extremist movements.
