Autumn wave of illness: Corona and flu on the rise – what to do?

Autumn not only brings colorful leaves, but also an increase in respiratory illnesses. According to the latest weekly report from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), we are currently experiencing high activity in acute respiratory diseases (ARE). The number of infections is increasing, and right now the question arises as to how best to behave and whether vaccinations make sense. These topics were recently examined by Professor Christoph Spinner, an expert in infectious diseases at the Rechts der Isar Clinic in Munich.

A decisive factor for the increasing number of infections is the weather. Professor Spinner explains that “cold viruses love wet and cold weather.” These climatic conditions favor the spread of viruses, which has led to an increase in infections in recent weeks. The Oktoberfest, which was celebrated in September and October, may also have contributed regionally to this increase. There are already initial indications from wastewater monitoring that confirm this trend.

Current hospital situation and vaccination recommendations

However, some positive news comes from Professor Spinner when it comes to the number of hospitalizations for serious respiratory infections. He reports: “There is no increase in the number of serious lung infections treated in clinics.” In fact, the current statistics even show a decrease compared to the previous week. This could indicate that infections are increasing, but not to the extent that hospitalization is required.

The infectiologist recommends vaccinations for the coming weeks. “Vaccination makes sense now,” says Spinner and recommends getting vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as possible. People with chronic illnesses or previous illnesses in particular should take this advice seriously in order to protect themselves and others. There is also the option of getting vaccinated against the flu at the same time. According to Spinner, it makes sense to consider a flu vaccination by the end of November at the latest, as an increase in flu cases is expected at this point.

Current information on the Corona situation in Bavaria and further developments can be found in a live stream that will take place today at 2 p.m. Professor Spinner will give his assessments of the current situation, which will be of greater interest to many citizens. Such measures and information are important to educate the population about the risks and prevention options. Let's follow the advice of the experts and take care of our health in this changeable season.
