Hacker attack on schools in the Kitzingen district: What's behind it?
An unprecedented hacker attack targeted seven schools in the Kitzingen district on Wednesday! The cyber attacks hit several institutions, including the state secondary schools in Kitzingen and Dettelbach as well as the renowned Armin Knab High School, the Marktbreit High School and the vocational school. FOSBOS and the Erich Kästner School in Kitzingen were not spared from this digital attack.
Although the extent of the damage is still unknown, regular classes remain undisturbed! The central IT services and the internet were isolated as a precautionary measure after irregularities were discovered on Wednesday morning. Classes continue, but the schools can currently only be reached by telephone - the email systems are out of service!
Important background knowledge
The exact background to the cyber attack is currently unclear and the investigation is in full swing. The Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture has set clear security standards for IT systems in schools to prevent such incidents. According to these guidelines, schools must ensure, in cooperation with their school authorities, that IT security is guaranteed during school operations. There are currently no reports of similar hacker attacks in other Lower Franconian districts.
