Hildesheim is commemorating the Memorial Day: Leaning and prayer for peace
On Sunday, November 17th, the city of Hildesheim becomes the scene of a moving commemoration: the Memorial Day is just around the corner! At 11 a.m., citizens gather in the town hall, Markt 1, in the Gustav Struckmann meeting room to commemorate the war dead together. An ecumenical prayer and a ceremonial wreath in the cemetery in the north cemetery are on the program. The meeting point for the leaning is the main entrance of the cemetery.
donation campaign and student engagement
Already on Saturday, November 16, the Volksbund Deutsche Wargräberfürsorge will be active: politicians, naval representatives and firefighters collect donations in the city center and donations in front of consumer markets. These money flow into the important educational and memory work of the Volksbund as well as the maintenance of war graves. Another highlight of the commemorative events will take place on Thursday, November 14th, when students from Hildesheim lay down bouquets on the war graves in the north cemetery between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. With over 350 registrations, the participation is record -breaking this year!
The Memorial Day is more than just a commemoration day - he is a call to memory of the victims of war and violence. In times when peace in Europe is threatened by conflicts, the importance of this day becomes particularly noticeable. The Volksbund Deutsche Wargräberfürsorge, which has been in charge of war graves in many countries since 1919, is committed to reconciliation and understanding. This mission is more recent than ever given Russia's attack in Russia, which is contrary to international law. The Memorial Day reminds us of how valuable a life in peace is!
