In 2024, the 1000th anniversary of the death of Emperor Henry II will be celebrated in Bamberg, and the city and the diocese will be celebrating this important anniversary. A highlight of the program is the exhibition “1000 Years Ago” in the Bamberg Historical Museum, which can be viewed from October 25, 2024 to April 27, 2025. This special exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the year 1024 and experience everyday life at the court of Henry II and his wife Kunigunde museum.bamberg.de reported.
A journey back in time
The show takes place in the Old Court, the historic core of Bamberg, and provides insights into the reign of the imperial couple and the lives of the people around them. It illuminates both the lavish aspects of the imperial court and the realities of life for the ordinary population. Many myths about the Middle Ages are questioned using interactive elements. Guests have the opportunity to learn about clothing, experience ancient crafts and even feel the weight of armor. These experiences are intended to reshape the image of the Middle Ages and promote a historically informed understanding of the period around 1000.
The exhibition is curated by Arne Schönfeld and is a continuation of an earlier show that took place in 2002 in honor of Heinrich's coronation. The current exhibition pays particular attention to how Henry II transformed the city of Bamberg into a center of power through strategic development and brought about significant changes in the city's development faz.net holds on.
