André Hahn: From Oberneuland to Eintracht – A career puzzle!
André Hahn, a name that brings back many memories of exciting moments in German football. From his childhood in Oberneuland through the ups and downs of his career at Hamburger SV, FC Augsburg and the national team, Hahn has written a remarkable chapter in German football. The 34-year-old is currently assistant coach of the U17 team at Eintracht Frankfurt and is providing fresh inspiration there.
“I’m on the way to work,” says Hahn as he picks up. You can feel the joy in his new job in Frankfurt. “My family and I feel very comfortable here.” The connection to the region, also from his time at Kickers Offenbach, shapes his life here. Despite the move, he misses the beauty of Augsburg, where he left behind beautiful experiences and friendships.
An extraordinary career
The journey of football has never been linear for Hahn. He started at Hamburger SV in the U19 and fought his way through various positions to the Champions League. “I had to work hard for everything and I am very proud of what I have achieved,” he reflects on his career. The jump from a village club to a large club was an important step that was not only sporty but also personally formative. Because he juggled the demands of life early on – education, training and the dream of professional football all in one.
After a time in the regional league, he found his way through Kickers Offenbach and finally FC Augsburg to a phase that catapulted him into the Bundesliga. "I moved to FCA during the winter break when the club was at the bottom of the table. We then made an incredible comeback," he says. This return to football meant a lot for Hahn, because it was the beginning of renewed sporting fulfillment - including his international debut against Poland, which became an unforgettable moment for him.
“I remember the call from Hansi Flick,” says Hahn, laughing. “It was an indescribable moment, especially because my family and many friends were in the stadium.” As quickly as luck came, his professional career ended abruptly. In his 250th Bundesliga game against Schalke 04, his knee injury was a constant companion. “I would have liked to continue playing, but the injury was too severe,” he admits, remembering this challenging time.
After his playing career ended, Hahn briefly thought about hanging up his football boots and taking a different path, but luckily he found the motivation to get his coaching license. "I got my B license last year and now I'm working at Eintracht Frankfurt. It feels like winning the lottery," he says enthusiastically about his new role. Here he can combine his passion for football and talent development.
The FCA and the prospect of the future
“FCA will always have a place in my heart,” states Hahn. He now expects a lot from the current team: “I’m a little too far away to make a real judgement, but I see great potential.” His own connection to the club and its history is palpable when he gives optimistic outlooks for a secure season with an upward view.
In conclusion, André Hahn is not only an active part of football, but also a passionate coach who wants to shape the next generation of players.
